JOB SUMMARY:

Perform a variety of tasks that vary in complexity and difficulty based on type of vehicle/equipment such as automotive, light/medium/heavy duty diesel trucks, heavy construction equipment such as cranes, dozers, excavators, loaders, pavers, rollers and farm/agricultural equipment as well as small equipment like motorcycles, ATV/UTV, boats, power generation and electrical golf carts, light/messaging equipment.

 

PRINCIPLE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The listed duties are essential job functions that the position has been created to perform.  The list of duties is not exhaustive.  The employee may be called upon to perform any task that is implied from the listed duties or is within the scope of the job summary.  Must be able to work emergency and on call time. Attendance and punctuality is an essential function of this position

  1. Prepares cost estimates, plans and specifications
  2. Provides technical engineering advice
  3. Assists in the direction and supervision of employees and the daily and long range activities of the department
  4. Assists in the supervision and management of construction inspection of all capital projects
  5. Plans and organizes technical engineering work
  6. Prepares and reviews plans and contracts
  7. Prepares, coordinates and recommends projects based on field conditions and economic alternatives

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Adjust and align wheels, torque bolts and screws and attach system components
  • Diagnose and identify malfunctions using computerized diagnostic tools and equipment
  • Disassemble and reassemble vehicle/equipment parts and components
  • Disassemble and reassemble major heavy equipment components or making adjustments through onboard computer programs
  • Discuss vehicle/equipment issues, maintenance plans and work performed with customers
  • Follow checklist to ensure that all critical parts and components are examined
  • Identify mechanical and electrical problems, often using computerized diagnostic equipment
  • Inspect, repair and replace defective or warn parts such as bearings, pistons and gears
  • Records inspections, test results, work performed and parts used in Fleet Information Systems
  • Overhaul and test major components such as engines, transmissions, hydraulics and electric systems
  • Perform routine/scheduled maintenance including oil changes, inspections, tune-ups, tire rotations, and checking batteries and lubricating parts/components
  • Raise trucks and heavy parts or equipment by using hydraulic, pneumatic or electric jacks or hoists
  • Read and interpret diagnostic test results, often by using dials, gauges and other mechanical/computer equipment

 EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, & EXPERIENCE

  • Required completion of formal training in a postsecondary institution/training program or ten (10) years fleet experience
  • Required one (1) Current Master ASE in Automotive, Diesel, or Transit and five (5) years' experience
  • Required certification from MACS Mobile Air Conditioning Society in freon installation, automotive air conditioning and emissions (including CFC 12, Refrigerant recycling and service procedures)
  • Required Class B CDL State of Texas (Must be obtained within six (6) months of employment or attainment of position as a condition of continued employment with Fleet Services)
